Protective third eye pair for Shamanic Ritual Costume

The use of brass eyes—often affixed to the shaman’s costume, headdress, drum, boots, or other ritual objects—serves multiple symbolic and spiritual functions. These eyes can come in different styles.

The classical usage was to provide the shaman's spirits with sight. Spirits, especially ancestral or helper spirits accompany the shaman often inhabiting ritual items. These brass eyes allow the spirits to “see” more clearly in the material plane and participate more effectively in rituals. In traditional Mongolian shamanism this was particularly important during ritual possession, when spirits descend into the shaman’s body or objects.

Protective third eye pair for Shamanic Ritual Costume

The use of brass eyes—often affixed to the shaman’s costume, headdress, drum, boots, or other ritual objects—serves multiple symbolic and spiritual functions.

They symbolize expanded vision, both metaphorically and metaphysically. Shamans must see into multiple realms: the upper world, middle world, and lower world etc. These brass eyes symbolize “second sight” or “spirit sight”—demonstrating that shamans perceive hidden things, spirits, illnesses, or fate etc. The costume itself becomes a liminal extension of the shaman's sensory organs.
